Your first Korean meal: choose, order and explore
Turn a food photograph into a meal you can order, then an area you can explore.
Guide reviewed: 1 October 2026 · Editorial guidance; confirm current provider conditions.
Choose by what you want to eat
Use our food cards to compare a rice dish, soup, noodles or a shared meal. Read the common ingredients and serving notes before looking at the map. Recipes vary by restaurant, and a photograph does not establish every ingredient or portion size.
Check the menu before sitting down
Confirm the displayed price, whether it is per person or per dish, and any minimum order. For solo dining, choose a place that accepts one-person orders rather than assuming every shared barbecue or hotpot will. Ask how spicy the dish is and whether the kitchen can adjust it.
Use a short ordering phrase
Point to the menu and say “이거 하나 주세요” (one of this, please). Ask “혼자 식사할 수 있나요?” (can I eat here alone?) or “많이 매운가요?” (is it very spicy?). Confirm the answer before ordering; ingredients and changes must be checked with the restaurant. The Travel Help guide has more phrases and a video.
Follow the food into a neighbourhood
For a Seoul market meal, open the street-food guide and choose Gwangjang, Myeongdong or Mangwon according to your route. For a longer food trip, compare Jeonju or Busan with their full destination guides and transport plans. These are editorial starting points, not restaurant reservations or guaranteed opening times.
Find the places on a map
Map searches are starting points. Check the correct branch, entrance and current provider notice before setting out.
Keep learning or plan the visit
