A closer look

Know the area
Tongyeong lies on Korea’s southern coast in the Gyeongsang region. Dongpirang, Jungang Market and Gangguan form a useful central cluster. The bus terminal and Mireuksan cable-car area need onward transport. Offshore islands are separate excursions.
Top sights
Dongpirang Village
Follow the hillside lanes above Gangguan for murals and harbour views. This is a residential neighbourhood with slopes and steps; keep voices low and avoid private doorways.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: The colourful hillside lanes overlook Gangguan, but they remain residential. Choose a short signed route if the slopes are tiring, and keep doorways clear. Combine the walk with the market below rather than repeatedly climbing back and forth.
Gangguan & Jungang Market
Explore the harbour and browse the market beside Dongpirang. Fish, dried seafood and small food shops make it a good place to sample the city.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: The harbour and market work together as a compact first stop. Browse fresh and dried seafood, then agree portion size and preparation before ordering. Individual stalls operate independently, so a market opening time does not guarantee every shop is available.
Mireuksan cable car
Consider a cable-car trip for views across the southern islands. Check the operator’s hours, wind conditions and any remaining steps to the viewpoint before buying a ticket.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: Check operating conditions and the actual boarding point before leaving the harbour. Reaching the upper station and walking onward on the mountain are different activities. Allow for queues, steps and the return transfer, and keep an alternative for windy weather.
Sebyeonggwan Hall
Add a heritage stop at the former naval headquarters area. The large timber hall offers a different perspective on Tongyeong from the harbour and murals.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: The historic hall provides context for Tongyeong's naval past. Pair it with the surrounding heritage district and a harbour meal. Check admission and any restricted areas, and take care around raised thresholds or steps.
Mireuksan walking paths
For a longer nature outing, choose a named trail and decide how you will return. The photographed stepped path is not a promise of a step-free route from the cable car. Review the walking level and weather before adding a climb to a city sightseeing day.
Plan an island excursion
An island visit needs its own ferry timetable and weather check. Select a particular island and confirm both outbound and return sailings with the operator. Allow a spare margin before any onward coach, and keep identification and booking details available.
Travel from Seoul
Seoul → Tongyeong by coach
Compare an express-bus search from Seoul Express Bus Terminal with intercity services from Seoul Nambu Terminal. Confirm the departure location and Tongyeong arrival shown on your ticket.
Terminal → harbour
Use a local bus or taxi from Tongyeong Bus Terminal to Gangguan, Jungang Market or your accommodation. Keep luggage transfer separate from the climb through Dongpirang.
Cable car or island excursion
Check the local connection to the cable-car boarding area. For an island day, book and check the ferry separately, including the last return and weather notices.
Making the local connections
The main coach terminal is separate from the old harbour, so include a bus or taxi connection after arrival. Keep Dongpirang and Jungang Market together. Mireukdo, cable-car boarding and island ferries require their own plans; confirm the correct terminal or station name.

Local food
Chungmu gimbap
Small seaweed-and-rice rolls come with spicy squid salad and radish kimchi on the side. The rolls are mild; the accompaniments provide the chilli heat and chewy texture.
Seafood & market snacks
Browse Jungang Market for seafood and local snacks such as honey bread. Ask about the full price and preparation before ordering fish, and check fillings if you have dietary preferences.
What to expect when ordering
Chungmu gimbap pairs small rice-and-seaweed rolls with spicy squid and radish side dishes. The seafood is served alongside the rolls, so check all components before ordering. Oyster dishes are another regional choice; ask about preparation and serving size.
Where to stay
Gangguan & central Tongyeong
A central hotel or guesthouse can suit visitors focusing on the harbour, market and Dongpirang. Check for steps, vehicle access and lift availability before reserving.
Mireukdo coast
A coastal hotel or pension can offer a quieter base. Compare the actual distance to restaurants and the cable-car station, and arrange your journey back to the bus terminal.

Accommodation map links are area searches, not confirmed bookings. Check the exact address, bedding, private bathroom, step-free access and cancellation terms with the property.
Before you book
A central or Gangguan base suits evening food and short harbour walks. A waterfront resort farther away may need a car or taxi. If planning an early ferry, check the exact departure terminal and ask the property about luggage storage.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1 · Harbour, murals & history
Travel from Seoul, leave your bags and explore Jungang Market and Gangguan. Walk up to Dongpirang if the slopes suit you, then add Sebyeonggwan if time allows.
Day 2 · Island views
Choose the cable car when conditions allow, or spend a slower morning along the waterfront. Leave a generous local-transfer buffer before your Seoul coach.
Before you go
Travel information reviewed on 9 September 2026 (Korea Standard Time). Check current opening hours, transport, weather and admission before travelling. The suggested itinerary is an editorial route idea, not a booked tour.
Choose footwear for slopes and steps. A waterfront walk, a cable-car ride and an island ferry are separate activities with different access requirements.

Seasons and what to bring
The harbour and islands are shaped by marine weather throughout the year. A clear city forecast does not guarantee a ferry or cable car will operate. Keep one flexible day if an island trip is central to your visit.
Choose a comfortable route
Dongpirang's hills, a mountain path and a ferry boarding point have different access needs. Ask the operator about your exact route and mobility requirements. A harbour-and-market visit can be adapted more easily than an unplanned mountain or island day.
A plan for unsettled weather
A historic hall, craft stop or longer meal can replace an exposed viewpoint. Check service notices before travelling to the cable car or ferry terminal. Do not leave the last return boat as your only way to catch a booked coach.
Culture & events
Tongyeong connects maritime history with public art. Murals change over time, so use photographs as a record of a place rather than a promise that a particular painting is still there.
