Know the area

Namwon lies in Jeonbuk State in southwestern Korea, close to the Jirisan mountain region. Its best-known story is Chunhyangjeon, the classic tale of Seong Chunhyang and Yi Mongryong. Their love, separation and resistance to an unjust magistrate are celebrated in literature, pansori storytelling and the city’s spring festival.

Begin around Gwanghanruwon Garden and the Yocheon River. Chunhyang Theme Park and the Kim Byung-jong Art Museum form another sightseeing cluster across the river. Keep one day for the main sights, or stay overnight for a slower evening walk.

Top sights

Gwanghanruwon Garden

The essential Chunhyang stop: a traditional garden associated with the lovers’ first meeting. Explore Gwanghallu Pavilion, Ojakgyo Bridge, Chunhyang Shrine and Wanwoljeong Pavilion. The pond and tiled roofs reward a slow walk; evening lighting offers a different atmosphere when night entry is available.

Address: 1447 Yocheon-ro, Namwon. Allow around 1–2 hours as a planning estimate. Confirm admission and evening opening before visiting.

Suggested itinerary

An editorial route suggestion: adjust it to your arrival time, the weather and current opening hours.

One day — the Chunhyang essentials

Morning: arrive and explore Gwanghanruwon Garden, Ojakgyo Bridge and the pavilions.
Lunch: try chueotang near the garden.
Afternoon: cross toward Chunhyang Theme Park, then enjoy a relaxed Yocheon walk. Choose the art museum instead of the park if you prefer exhibitions or a shorter programme.
Evening: have dinner and return to the station, or see the garden lighting if opening hours and your train allow.

Two days — a garden evening and an art morning

Day 1: follow the garden and theme-park route, check in to your hotel or hanok, and enjoy a riverside evening.
Day 2: visit the Kim Byung-jong Art Museum if open, pause for lunch, and return to Namwon Station with a transfer buffer.
During Chunhyang Festival, replace part of the sightseeing schedule with a performance or cultural experience you have selected from the programme.

Before you go

Plan the visit

Spring brings the festival atmosphere; autumn suits a slower garden and riverside visit. In summer, allow shade and indoor breaks. Bring warm layers for winter evenings. Opening times, exhibitions, room offers and festival activities change, so use the official links for your dates.

The story is a work of literature: the sites celebrate its settings and characters. Photography shows the location at the time the image was taken.

Culture & events

Chunhyang Festival — a spring tradition since 1931

Namwon celebrates Chunhyang and Mongryong around Gwanghanruwon Garden and the Yocheon River. The festival is usually held in spring around late April or May; exact dates and the programme change each year. General festival admission is normally free, with charges possible for selected activities. Garden admission outside the festival follows its own rules.

The 2026 edition has already taken place. Check the organiser’s announcements for the next festival before making travel arrangements.

What to look for

The Chunhyang selection contest celebrates the story’s cultural legacy. Traditional processions and theatrical re-enactments bring characters into the streets, while pansori, Korean traditional music and contemporary performances connect old and new. Hanbok experiences, wedding re-enactments and riverside food areas may feature in the programme. Check the published schedule for the events offered in your year.

Book accommodation early once dates are confirmed, and allow extra time for crowds and transport near the venue.
