Get a transport card
A reusable transport balance, an unlimited city pass and a reserved intercity ticket solve different needs. Choose for the route you will actually take.
Start with your route, not the card design
A city pass may exclude an airport express service, an out-of-area bus or a particular rail line. Compare its current coverage against every planned leg. For a trip beyond Seoul, a broadly accepted stored-value card can cover local legs, while KTX and reserved coaches still require their own tickets. Check the pass operator rather than relying on an old price comparison.
Buy, load and test before boarding
Ask an approved seller which top-up method works with the exact card. Keep Korean cash as a backup where the reload point does not accept your foreign card. Check the displayed balance after loading, then remove the card from a wallet with other contactless cards before tapping. On buses, follow the local boarding and exit reader instructions to preserve applicable transfer benefits.
A gate error is not always low balance
Ask station staff before buying another card. A missed entry or exit tap can require correction. Show where you boarded and keep the same card for the journey. For refunds, ask about the balance, fee and permitted refund location before your final airport transfer; do not empty a card you still need.
When the first attempt fails
| What happened | Next action |
|---|---|
| The top-up machine refuses your card | Check accepted payment methods; ask a convenience-store seller about that exact transport card. |
| A pass does not cover the route | Buy the required ticket or use an accepted stored-value balance; confirm before entering. |
| You plan a KTX journey | Reserve a KTX ticket separately. Topping up a local transport card does not reserve a seat. |

Get a transport card
Try this first
- Choose a card for your route. Tmoney and EZL are broadly used; check the official comparison before buying a city-specific pass.
- Buy at an approved station counter or convenience store, then check the top-up method for that card and machine. Keep a backup payment method.
- Check the balance before boarding. Tap at the gate or bus reader, and follow the local instructions when leaving or transferring.
If you are still stuck
If a top-up fails, do not keep retrying a payment blindly. Ask station staff or a convenience-store clerk which method that card accepts.
