TRAVEL HELP · DECISION GUIDE

Foreign card declined?

First establish whether the purchase succeeded. Then identify whether the problem is at a shop terminal, on a website or at an ATM. These are different payment systems.

Stop a duplicate purchase

Open the merchant’s order or reservation history before paying again. Compare it with your bank app. A pending authorisation can exist without a completed order; it is not proof that you own a ticket. Note the time, amount, currency and any error message. Ask the merchant whether it has a completed transaction and contact your issuer if the records disagree.

At a shop terminal

Ask staff whether an international card of your network is accepted. If contactless payment fails, ask whether chip insertion is possible. Follow your bank’s PIN and approval instructions. Trying a different physical card may help, but repeated attempts do not fix a blocked account. Your issuer, not this site, can explain an account-specific decline.

On a website

Look for an overseas-card or international checkout option. A site that accepts local cards may use a different gateway for foreign cards. Check card details and any approval request through your bank’s own app; never give a helper your one-time code. If the site has no supported option, use its official international channel or ask a staffed sales desk.

Choosing currency and an ATM

If offered payment in your home currency, compare the displayed exchange rate and fees before choosing. Paying in KRW avoids the merchant’s home-currency conversion; your bank may still charge conversion or overseas fees. For cash, use a bank ATM that explicitly supports your card network, review its fee screen and keep the receipt. Withdraw only what you need for the next part of the trip.

Foreign card declined?

Try this first

  1. Check the order or reservation status before trying again, so you do not make a duplicate purchase.
  2. Ask to insert the card if tapping fails. Check overseas-payment settings and approval requests in your bank’s official app.
  3. Try a second card or ask whether cash is accepted. At an ATM, check international-card support and fees before confirming.

If you are still stuck

Contact your card issuer through its official app or the number on the card. Keep the receipt and booking confirmation. Never share a PIN, bank password or one-time code.
