Get connected on arrival

Data access, a Korean phone number and local identity verification are three different features. Check which one your booking or map task actually needs.

Match a plan to your phone

Check device compatibility and carrier lock before buying an eSIM. Ask whether the plan is data-only or includes voice and SMS, when validity starts, and whether tethering is permitted. A local number does not by itself guarantee identity verification on Korean websites. For two people sharing a pocket Wi-Fi device, agree how you will reconnect if separated.

Test at the sales counter

Use an official carrier or authorised seller and keep its support contact. Before leaving, turn off Wi-Fi and confirm that a map search loads on mobile data. Ask the seller which line should handle data and which settings are required. Keep your home SIM available if you need bank approval messages. Do not delete an eSIM profile as the first troubleshooting step: reinstallation rules vary.

Keep an offline fallback

Save hotel address, booked tickets, terminal names and the final walking route while connected. If data stops, check the active data line and provider instructions using trusted Wi-Fi. Send support the plan name, purchase reference and error message; never send bank passwords or one-time codes. Resolve the connection before starting a complex transfer.

Get connected on arrival

Try this first

  1. Before buying an eSIM, check whether your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked for another carrier. Keep your booking confirmation.
  2. At the airport, use an official carrier or roaming counter for SIM, eSIM or Wi-Fi options. Check whether the plan includes data only or also a Korean phone number.
  3. Activate and test your connection before leaving. Save your hotel address and an offline copy of essential directions.

If you are still stuck

If activation fails, return to the provider counter or use airport Wi-Fi to contact your provider. Do not remove your main SIM until you know how to restore it.
