Choose your route

Ulsanbawi return hike

7.6 km return · about 4 h walking

Official reference: 3.8 km and about 2 h each way. Add breaks, stair queues, photographs and bus travel. Steep steps make this more than a viewpoint stroll.

Turn around before the summit

Choose a turnaround on the same trail

Use the temple/Heundeulbawi section as your own turnaround option if the final stairs do not suit the day. This is not the summit itinerary, and no short-route time is guaranteed.

Reach the correct entrance

Reach Sokcho first, then use the city’s Seoraksan-bound 7 or 7-1 bus and confirm the current boarding point, direction and return service. Start the walk at Sogongwon, not the Osaek entrance.

Confirm access before travel

The 2026 autumn notice covers 11 restricted sections during 1 Nov–15 Dec, with different start dates. Ulsanbawi is outside the listed seasonal closures; this does not certify that it is open on your hiking day. Check live weather restrictions and the current entry-time table. The current table restricts Sogongwon–Ulsanbawi from sunset until two hours before the next sunrise.

Meals & a place to stay

Compare Seorak-dong for access to the trailhead with central Sokcho for meals and onward transport. Check the actual room, bus/taxi transfer and food opening on your date; a “mountain view” room needs operator confirmation.

Plan the return, not only the view

Allow for personal fitness, rest, rain, wind, ice and shorter daylight. Carry suitable footwear, water and warm/windproof layers; follow ranger instructions. Photos do not certify today’s foliage, visibility or trail surface. Room views, business opening and last transport require date-specific checks.
