Seoul Street Food Guide

What are you hungry for?

Pick one market for a relaxed visit. These are separate neighbourhoods, not one continuous walking route.

Budgets are editorial planning allowances for several snacks, not current menu prices. Transport and alcohol are extra. Check the displayed price, portion and total before paying.

Follow the sound of pancakes frying. Pull up a seat, share something crisp and finish with a small roll of gimbap. This is the stop for a proper market meal.

Suggested visit
Lunch or early dinner · allow 60–90 min
Food budget / person
₩15,000–25,000
Getting there
Jongno 5-ga · Line 1 · Exit 8

The official guide lists the food alley at 09:00–23:00; individual stalls vary.

Start with these three bites

  1. 01

    빈대떡

    Bindaetteok

Mung-bean pancake: a crisp edge, a soft centre. Share one first.

  2. 02

    꼬마김밥

    Kkoma gimbap

Small seaweed rice rolls. Ask whether mustard dipping sauce comes separately.

  3. 03

    떡볶이

    Tteokbokki

Chewy rice cakes in a red sauce; ask about the heat before buying.

Your tasting walk

Walk the food alley first → choose one pancake stall → share gimbap → take a Cheonggyecheon stroll.

A little local know-how

Ask the total price and portion size before ordering. Seats usually belong to the stall where you buy food; ask before sitting.

Let the shop lights set the scene. Wander between sizzling skewers and sweet snacks, choose a little at a time and make the streets your evening tasting route.

Suggested visit
Late afternoon into evening · allow 60–90 min
Food budget / person
₩20,000–35,000
Getting there
Myeongdong · Line 4

There is no single opening time for all stalls. Weather, day and vendor affect the line-up.

Start with these three bites

  1. 01

    닭꼬치

    Dak-kkochi

Grilled chicken skewers. Ask for the sauce you want before it is brushed on.

  2. 02

    계란빵

    Gyeran-ppang

A warm egg-topped bread; a gentle break between stronger flavours.

  3. 03

    호떡

    Hotteok

A sweet filled pancake. Let the hot syrup inside cool before your first bite.

Your tasting walk

Start near Myeongdong Station → compare menus along the shopping streets → choose one savoury snack → finish with something sweet.

A little local know-how

Compare displayed prices before buying. Premium seafood can use much more of your budget than a simple snack. Stop to eat out of the main flow of people.

Browse a working neighbourhood market, with groceries beside snack counters. Build a small takeaway feast, then slow down in the cafés and streets of Mangwon-dong.

Suggested visit
Late morning or afternoon · allow 60–90 min
Food budget / person
₩12,000–22,000
Getting there
Mangwon · Line 6 · Exit 2

The official guide lists 10:00–21:00, with hours varying by shop.

Start with these three bites

  1. 01

    닭강정

    Dakgangjeong

Bite-size glazed fried chicken. Compare sweet and spicy sauces, and ask for a small box.

  2. 02

    고로케

    Goroke

A crisp croquette with a savoury filling. Ask what is inside before choosing.

  3. 03

    떡갈비

    Tteokgalbi

Seasoned meat patties. Ask about the meat and whether your order is ready to eat.

Your tasting walk

Mangwon Station → browse the market → choose two takeaway snacks → explore Mangridan-gil. Add the river only if you want a longer walk.

A little local know-how

Order a small portion first. For a riverside picnic, check the walking route and weather, and take your packaging away. The park is a separate walk from the market.

SEOUL, AT YOUR PACE

One afternoon, one good plan.

Traditional flavours? Choose Gwangjang, then walk by Cheonggyecheon. Shopping after sunset? Choose Myeongdong. A slower neighbourhood day? Choose Mangwon and its cafés. You do not need to visit all three in one day.

A few words go a long way.

Point to the food, smile, and show the Korean sentence when it helps.

Before your first bite

  1. Bring a payment backup. Ask whether cards are accepted before ordering, and carry small cash notes.
  2. Ask about ingredients and sauces. Meat, seafood, nuts, milk or eggs may be present even when not visible. Do not assume a dish is vegetarian or allergen-free.
  3. Buy one portion first and leave room to try another stall. Ask before photographing vendors; keep walkways clear.

Visitor information checked 22 September 2026. Individual stall schedules, dishes and prices vary.
