Hahoe and Yangdong were jointly inscribed by UNESCO in 2010 as historic clan villages. Hahoe remains a lived-in community: follow public lanes, the riverside and signed visitor areas rather than entering private homes. Check current tickets and opening times with the village. Mask performances have a separate schedule; Buyongdae across the river requires a separate transfer, not a guaranteed ferry.
Transport
Arrive at Andong rail station or coach terminal, then check the village bus or arrange a taxi to the visitor entrance. Confirm the last return. The village is outside Andong city; city sights and restaurants require separate road journeys.
Stay
For a hanok stay choose a property that explicitly accepts bookings and verify bathroom type, bedding and check-in. Historic houses are not automatically guesthouses. Andong city is a simpler base for an early train.
Local food
Near the visitor area compare restaurants serving Andong-style heotjesabap or grilled mackerel; ask what is included and whether there is a minimum order. Okya Sikdang is an optional Andong city market meal, not a restaurant inside Hahoe.
Personal essentials
Walking shoes, drinking water, a charged phone and a light warm layer. Save the return transport, entrance pin and reservation details before leaving town. Stay on marked paths and take your rubbish back.
A workable visit plan
Visitor entrance → public village lanes and signed houses → riverside walk → meal → booked return. Allow extra time only for a confirmed mask performance.
