N Seoul Tower & Namsan Observatory

See Seoul from Namsan at two different levels: the free outdoor summit terraces around the tower, and the separately ticketed indoor N Seoul Tower observatory. This first-visit guide shows exactly how to reach them by cable car, circular bus or walking route, then time the visit for daylight, sunset and the city lights.

Location & map stops

Know which viewpoint you are choosing

**Free summit view:** the outdoor terraces and plaza around N Seoul Tower give open city views without an observatory ticket. You can still see the tower, pavilion and illuminated skyline.

**Paid tower observatory:** enter N Seoul Tower and buy the separate observatory ticket for the higher indoor panorama. The cable-car fare does not include observatory admission.

What to see & do

A view that changes by the hour

Arrive 60–90 minutes before sunset when visibility is good. First photograph the tower and Palgakjeong pavilion from the plaza, then walk the free outdoor terraces while the city is still legible. If you want the highest indoor panorama, enter the paid observatory after dusk.

What you can see

On a clear day, use the mountain ridges to understand Seoul's shape: the historic centre lies north of Namsan, the Han River and Gangnam stretch to the south, and the city's towers and bridges appear as the light fades. Haze, rain and reflections through observatory glass can reduce the view, so check conditions before paying.

Best photographs

For the tower itself, step back toward the pavilion and plaza. For a skyline photograph, use the outdoor railings before full darkness or press the lens close to indoor glass to reduce reflections. Tripods and crowded railings can conflict; follow staff signs and keep circulation clear.

Travel from Seoul

Easiest first visit — circular bus

1. Take Seoul Subway Line 3 or 4 to **Chungmuro Station, Exit 2**, then walk straight for about one minute to the bus stop in front of Daehan Cinema; or use **Dongguk University Station, Exit 6** and follow signs toward Jangchungdan Park.
2. Board the **01A or 01B Namsan circular bus** toward YTN Seoul Tower. These are cashless buses, so carry a transport card or supported mobile transit payment.
3. Get off at **YTN Seoul Tower**. Save the return stop before exploring because the loop runs one way.
4. Recheck the live route and last return in Naver Map on your travel day. The official tower access page currently lists 01A and 01B, but operations can change.

Official circular-bus directions

Scenic route — Myeongdong to cable car

1. Leave **Myeongdong Station, Exit 5** and walk toward Hoehyeon intersection.
2. Turn left and continue uphill to the **Namsan Ormi** inclined elevator.
3. Ride or walk up to the lower cable-car station, buy the cable-car ticket, then ride toward the summit.
4. From the upper station, follow the final uphill path and signs to the tower plaza.

The official tower guide estimates about 15 minutes from Myeongdong Station to the cable-car connection, but this does not include queues. It lists Namsan Ormi and cable-car hours separately, so check both before relying on a late return.

Walking route — when you want the mountain

Official approaches include approximately 30 minutes uphill from Namsan Library and 30–40 minutes from the National Theater side. Surfaces include slopes and steps. Start early enough to descend in daylight or confirm your return bus; wet leaves, summer heat and winter ice can make a short urban climb harder than expected.

Where to stay

Regional food

Eat before or after the viewpoint

For the widest choice and clearer prices, eat in Myeongdong or Chungmuro before going up, or return there after the view. Tower cafés and restaurants are convenient but have their own opening times, menus, reservation rules and ticket arrangements.

If dinner at the tower is the main event, book directly with the restaurant and confirm whether an observatory ticket is included; do not assume every reservation or dining product works the same way.

Build your visit

The reliable 2½-hour plan

1. **T−90 minutes:** arrive at the summit before sunset; orient yourself at the plaza and outdoor terraces.
2. **T−45 minutes:** photograph the tower and skyline during softer light.
3. **Sunset:** stay outside if visibility is good, or enter the paid observatory before the main queue grows.
4. **After dark:** make one final outdoor circuit for the illuminated tower and city lights.
5. **Before leaving:** check the live circular-bus or cable-car return rather than waiting until closing time.

Pair it without rushing

In the afternoon, visit Myeongdong or Namsangol Hanok Village, have an early meal, then go up Namsan. Keep the tower as the only major evening attraction: the approach, queues and return journey take longer than the straight-line map suggests.

Before you go

Before leaving your hotel

Check visibility, rain and wind; save the exact entrance and your return stop in Naver Map; load a transport card; and carry a layer for the exposed summit. Wear shoes suitable for slopes even when using the bus or cable car.
