K-TRAVEL / DESTINATION GUIDE
Sokcho
Combine the mountain scenery of Seoraksan with a harbour city, a beach and the food of Abai Village. Sokcho works well as a two-day escape: give the national park its own day and leave time for the coast.

A closer look

Know the area
Sokcho sits on the east coast in Gangwon, with Seoraksan inland to the west. The national park entrance, Sokcho Beach, Abai Village and the markets need separate local connections. Choose whether your accommodation should favour the mountain or the coast.
Top sights
Seoraksan National Park
Start at the Sogongwon entrance for the Sokcho-side visitor area. Choose a route that suits your time and fitness. A cable car visit and a mountain hike are different activities; check current operation and trail notices.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: Begin by choosing a trail at the Sogongwon visitor area that fits your group. A valley walk, waterfall outing and Ulsanbawi climb are different commitments. Check closures and weather before departure; cable-car tickets or operation should never be assumed.
Abai Village
Explore a neighbourhood shaped by refugees from northern Korea. Its local food and hand-pulled Gaetbae ferry are part of the experience; check whether the ferry is running when you arrive.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: Explore the waterfront lanes and local food with time to understand the village's displaced-family history. The gaetbae crossing, if operating, is a separate small transport experience. Keep nearby residential doors clear and plan a short walk around your meal.
Sokcho Beach
Enjoy a coastal walk and nearby restaurants. The express bus terminal is close to the beach, while the intercity terminal serves a different part of town. Check seasonal swimming notices.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: The beach can be a simple coastal pause before or after checking in. For swimming or beach activities, use current local notices rather than the appearance of archive photographs. Keep a separate buffer if your return coach leaves from the other terminal.
Cheongchoho Lake
Take a gentler walk beside this lagoon in the city. Choose a manageable section of the waterfront rather than assuming a complete circuit will fit before your return bus.
NAVER Map · English ↗KakaoMap · English ↗
Official visitor information ↗
Plan your visit: Choose a waterside section near your accommodation or final meal. The lake gives a calmer city stop after a mountain day. Do not assume you need to complete a full circuit to enjoy the view.
Biryong Falls outing
A waterfall walk is one possible way to experience the national park without making the entire day about a summit. Check the currently open route and allow for steps and uneven surfaces. Leave the trail while there is enough daylight for the return transfer.
Sokcho Tourist Fish Market
Browse food stalls and takeaways in the central market area, comparing portion sizes before buying several dishes. Ask about shellfish and other ingredients. Pair the market with a city walk rather than carrying perishable food through a long mountain outing.
Travel from Seoul
Seoul → Sokcho by coach
Compare departures from Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Dong Seoul Terminal. Read the exact arrival terminal on your ticket: Sokcho’s express and intercity terminals are in different neighbourhoods.
Continue to Seoraksan
From your arrival point, use a checked local bus or taxi to Seoraksan Sogongwon. Reserve enough time for the return connection after your visit, especially during autumn foliage periods.
City connections
Use local buses or taxis between the beach, Abai Village, market and accommodation. A single transport card is convenient for supported local services; long-distance coach seats need their own ticket.
Making the local connections
Check whether your coach uses the express or intercity terminal. Seoraksan's entrance needs a further local journey, so factor both directions into the day. Autumn demand and road congestion can affect connections; leave a generous buffer before a booked Seoul-bound coach.

Local food
Abai sundae
This northern-style sausage is a signature of Abai Village. Fillings vary and can include pork, rice and vegetables; ask the restaurant about ingredients before ordering.
Dakgangjeong at the market
Bite-sized fried chicken is coated in a sweet-savoury sauce, often with chilli. Check the heat level and whether nuts are used. Order a smaller portion if you want to try several market foods.
What to expect when ordering
Abai sundae and squid sundae have different ingredients, so ask what is inside rather than translating both simply as sausage. Dakgangjeong is a sweet-spicy chicken option. Mulhoe usually contains raw seafood in a cold broth; choose a cooked alternative if preferred.
Where to stay
Sokcho Beach & Cheongchoho
Consider a hotel or guesthouse near the beach or lake for coastal walks and food stops. Check the route from your specific bus terminal and ask about luggage storage.
Seoraksan access area
A hotel or pension nearer Seoraksan can suit an early start. Confirm restaurant options, the first local connection and your return to the coach terminal before booking.

Accommodation map links are area searches, not confirmed bookings. Check the exact address, bedding, private bathroom, step-free access and cancellation terms with the property.
Before you book
Central Sokcho is useful for markets and harbour food, while accommodation near the beach suits a coastal evening. A park-side base can help with an early hike but may have fewer evening options. Check where your coach arrives before choosing a property.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1 · A coastal introduction
Arrive from Seoul, settle in and visit Abai Village. Add the market and either the beach or a Cheongchoho walk.
Day 2 · Time for the mountain
Travel to Seoraksan early and follow a route that leaves a generous return buffer. Recheck your coach’s terminal before heading back to Seoul.
Before you go
Travel information reviewed on 9 September 2026 (Korea Standard Time). Check current opening hours, transport, weather and admission before travelling. The suggested itinerary is an editorial route idea, not a booked tour.
Mountain weather and access can change. Check the park’s current route notices before departure.
Seasons and what to bring
Autumn mountain scenery is popular, but colours vary with date and elevation. Winter images show conditions that may require specialist equipment and closed trails. Summer coastal conditions and mountain weather can differ on the same day.
Choose a comfortable route
Seoraksan is not a single accessible route. Ask the park which open paths match your walking range. A shorter visitor-area walk plus Abai Village or the coast can be a satisfying alternative to a long climb.
A plan for unsettled weather
Use a city-and-market day when the park forecast is poor. Follow trail closures rather than relying on an older route description. Move the mountain visit to your clearest available day and keep the coach-return buffer.
Culture & events
Abai Village offers a window into displaced families’ food traditions and history. Keep residential lanes quiet and ask before photographing people or the inside of a home.
