From Seoul, take ITX-Cheongchun or the Gyeongchun Line to Gapyeong, then reach the wharf by local transport and use the island crossing.

Choose a practical base

Look for accommodation in or around Chuncheon, Gangwon; access via Gapyeong. Compare its distance to the arrival station or terminal and your first sightseeing stop. A rural attraction may be easier to visit from a town base with an arranged transfer.

For a hanok stay, ask about bed or floor bedding, private bathrooms, steps, check-in and luggage storage. For a hotel, compare access to the local transport you plan to use.

A taste of Gangwon

Dakgalbi — Chicken, cabbage, sweet potato and rice cakes cook together in a spicy sauce on a broad hot plate. Chuncheon’s Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street is a well-known place to try it.

Typical ingredients: Chicken, Cabbage and onion, Sweet potato, Gochujang (red chilli paste), Optional rice cakes. Spicy, savoury and a little sweet. The vegetables soften into the sauce while rice cakes add a chewy bite.
