THE PRACTICAL GUIDE / TRANSPORT

Subway & metro

Read the line and direction, use a transport card, and find the right station exit.

Your first metro journey

  1. Find the station and direction

Check the line name or number, your destination and any transfer. The same platform can serve trains with different end stations.

  2. Prepare a transport card or single ticket

Use an accepted transit card with enough balance, or follow the ticket machine instructions for a single journey. Keep a single ticket until you have left the final gate.

  3. Tap in and check the platform

Tap your card at the entry gate, then follow the signs for the correct direction. Let passengers leave before you board.

  4. Transfer, then tap out

Follow transfer signs inside the station. At the end of the trip, tap out and check the exit number or elevator route to street level.

Choose the easier station route

An elevator entrance can be on a different side of the station from the nearest numbered exit. Look up facilities before you travel, and ask station staff about lift availability, boarding ramps or the platform gap.

Allow more time for transfers with luggage or mobility aids. Check the last train to your exact destination before an evening outing.
